Nashua

Nashua is located in the county of Hillsborough, and is part of New Hampshire's Southern Tier. Only forty minutes from Boston, the ocean and many major ski areas.

Named Money Magazine's "Best Place to Live in America" twice in the survey's 11-year history, puts Nashua back on top after a tough decade. In April of 2003, Men's Journal Magazine named Nashua #24 in the top 50 places to live in America.

With low unemployment, a high quality of life, low crime rate and much economic growth, Money Magazine's Nashua has become a prime area for relocation and expansion. High-tech companies have been credited with leading the area out of the recession. The downsizing of companies such as Digital Equipment Corp. spawned dozens of small start-ups, creating hundreds or thousands of jobs!

A lively downtown Nashua area offers shopping and several restaurants. Nashua is the second largest city in New Hampshire ranking slightly in population behind Manchester. Nashua is part of the "Gateways Region" which also includes the areas of Milford, Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Salem, Pelham, Atkinson, Merrimack, Hudson and Litchfield. This area has been in the forefront of the state's economic growth. New Hampshire has expanded its job base faster than all but three states since 1985.

This expansion can be attributed to many factors such as the economy, close proximity to Boston and the White Mountains, no state income or sales taxes and a high real estate value. It also has one of the fastest growing markets in the country with a low crime rate which has also contributed to the attractiveness of the area.

The southern New Hampshire region is free of extreme heat or winter cold, The average July temperature is 70 degrees, while January readings are in the 20's. To the west of the Gateways region are the rolling foothills of the Monadnock Mountains while the center of the region is occupied by the Merrimack Valley River plain.

Nashua has many available transportation facilities within the area. The Nashua Airport, Boire Field is located adjacent to Route 101-A and the Everett Turnpike. This airport is mainly used by private pilots and corporate aircraft. The Manchester Airport lies to the north handling daily flights from many commercial carriers. These carriers provide service with connection flights to major cities. Boston's Logan Airport, 45 minutes to the south, is the largest in the area. This airport provides international as well as domestic service.

In 1741 the town was cut in half when the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border was established. The northern half kept the name Dunstable. In 1836 the town took the Nashua River's name, a Nashaway Indian word for "beautiful river with a pebbly bottom." Nashua became a manufacturing center, powered by the Middlesex Canal which connected the Merrimack River to Boston. It was incorporated as a city in 1853.
